Beginning

Uplink was started a long long time ago. I can hardly even remember what I was doing before it. But it did start somewhere - as a series of tech demos which were designed to demonstrate the principles. And here they are. These are the very first versions of Uplink - but already they have the look and feel of the game. They haven't been tested at all, so please don't email us if they don't work. We know they don't work properly. Look at the version numbers!

These programs should run ok straight from the CD. They are all Windows executables - so they won't work under Linux. Simply click on the "Run it" button, tell your browser to run the program from its current location, answer YES to any questions your browser gives you, and enjoy. Or you can run them straight from the CD. We've found that windows 2000 users get a serious speedup if they copy the programs to their hard disk, then delete opengl32.dll from the directory.

These programs are in date order, earliest first. The top row of programs are prototypes written before Uplink was even started. The second row are the first versions of the game, with the very last program being Version 0.1 - the first "playable" version of the game. Most of these are from late 1999. They are buggy as hell.

Note: Because Uplink was originally developed for Windows, these programs are not available for the Macintosh. They are presented here as screenshots, just for the curious.

The task manager was designed and tested as a seperate program, as shown in this app

An early test of possible gameplay, involving a password screen and hacking tools

The first attempt to pull everything together into one interface. Also the first use of (bad) 3d.

Version 0.07

Version 0.1

The last time 3D graphics were seen in Uplink, thankfully. Some basic gameplay was starting to appear. The first version that looks like Uplink. It's still very early on, but you can almost see the finished game in there somewhere. More advances in the missions this time, as you can now connect and view a few sample systems around the world. This was supposedly the "first playable" version. The basics were in place by this point.
